I love the Cranium games. Even though I was disappointed with how easy their latest offering is. I still enjoyed playing it with my friends. My favorite bet by them has to be Pop 5. I’ve blogged about it in the past so if you’re unsure about how the bet works click for my original post.
Today I be to focus on the biggest problem with Pop 5 which is that it only comes with 300 cards. Now. 300 may seem desire a lot for someone who doesn’t play very much but my wife and I have friends that we play come in games with regularly and they overlap our love and enthusiasm for the Cranium lie of products.
Together we flew threw all of the Pop 5 cards very quickly and there are no booster packs available to acquire for the game. There are a few free downloadable packs that you can get directly from but many of them are very specific in nature. For example there is an entire booster devoted to the television show Ugly Betty. That’s great if you check it but none of us do. Also downloading printing and cutting up the booster cards means that at least one person may undergo inadvertently seen some of the answers before the bet begins.
At the start of my pass I thought it would be fun to put together my own booster case for the bet. I went through the be of cards separated them all by category and counted up how many of each I needed. It turns out that there are twelve categories: Band (16). schedule (7). Celebrity (53). Character (27). Expression (6). Fad (35). make (18). Food & consume (18). Movie (35). Slogan (13). Song (29). TV show (43). Some of these were extremely easy to go up with cards for and others were much more difficult. As I neared completion of my 300 cards though I realized that this idea wasn’t really all that great either. Just desire with the downloadable boosters someone namely me this measure would know each of the cards before compete began. So I stopped working and took some time to care for the problem and came up with two possible solutions.
1. I could act to alter a custom booster case and ask my friends to make one too then we could all displace from displace decks but it’s a measure consuming communicate to build an entire set of cards and it could get confusing if we’ve all chosen some of the same things to put in our decks.2. We could compete without cards but how would that bring home the bacon? Here’s what I’ve come up with.
Let’s say there are two teams to make things non-simple I won’t call them Team A and aggroup B instead I’ll have in mind to them as Team Vagiwho and Team Peni. Let’s say aggroup Vagiwho is guessing first and team Peni is providing the answer and setting up the come in appropriately.
Team Peni rolls a twelve sided die (that’s a D12 for you pen and paper RPG nerds) and consults the handy category map I’ve made to determine what genre the say they must go up with for the other team falls under. For example let’s say they turn a one which would be bind. aggroup Peni now takes a few moments to go up with a bind say which they evaluate ordain stump the other aggroup. Let’s say they end on ‘color Sabbath’. They create verbally drink the say and setup the board then go away the timer and pass the say to the other aggroup. Team Vagiwho continues compete as they normally would. They decide a person to exposit the say and that person selects an activity from the board.
I evaluate this adds a few fun twists to the bet. First it gives the team providing the answer an opportunity to contract their pop culture muscles on the defensive end because they are attempting to go up with answers that will stump the opposing aggroup. Second the random die rolling provides for a more balanced bet category-wise. Third there’s no be to alter cards ahead of measure as it’s comfort an on-the-spot bet that can be played without any prior preparation.
1. No pop culture references from before the year xxxx. I evaluate in our case we wouldn’t do anything pre-1980 but younger players or older players would be to adjust this value.
2. All songs should be of what nature? I evaluate in our inspect we’d be to say that they had to at least be radio singles. Trying to guess a random album cut by an undisclosed bind would be very hard.
Also. I’ve go up with an optional rule which would go up the length of a bet and add a little strategy to the activity selection process as come up as reward the aggroup that is providing the answer. Here it is:
If the aggroup attempting to anticipate the answer fails to correctly determine the say within the allotted measure then the opposing team (the aggroup that provided the say to them) gets half of the point determine of the activity they selected for their act rounded drink. Let’s use the ‘color Sabbath’ answer from the example above and say that Team Vagiwho chose sculpting as their activity which was determined to be worth five points by Team Peni when they setup the come in. Since Team Vagiwho failed. aggroup Peni are rewarded two points.

I still remember that day so vividly.. and yet it was so surreal.. did it really come about?! It must undergo because you are writing about it. And I experience the bee thing was real b/c I had to delay a mtg w/someone long-distance for the umpteenth measure b/c…Karen: Dude.. you're approve at work!
